The eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester (eJPT) is a 100% practical certification on penetration testing and information security essentials. By passing the exam, a cyber security professional proves to employers they are ready for a rewarding new career. This certification has began to gain some traction within the industry.
I had really lost interest in learning new skills or pursuing security further. But after being assigned a mentor at work, who is a penetration tester, he rekindled my fire and excitement for security. After seeing many posts about how fun this exam was on LinkedIn, I thought this would be the next logical step after passing the Security+.
The exam consists of 20 multiple choice questions. A score of 15 out of 20 is required to pass. You are given 72 hours to finish the exam. They give you a VPN file, then off you go to find the answers through exploiting machines and pivoting through networks.
I started the exam as soon as I finished the last Black Box lab on the PTS course. It was about 4 p.m. in the afternoon on a Saturday. It took me about 45 minutes to get an initial foothold on the first machine then things started falling into place. I took a break for a few hours to eat supper with my wife and son, then back to the exam. The biggest issue I had with the exam was enumeration, the exam environment kept cutting out the connection while I was running dirbuster and hydra. I finished at 2 a.m., feeling comfortable that I had answered enough questions correctly to pass. I pressed the Submit Exam button, then immediately got the results, I passed 17 out of 20. I feel the exam could of been finished much sooner had the connection issues not occured, but nevertheless this exam was the most fun I've ever had taking a test.
The main learning source I used was the Penetration Testing Student course available for free with the . I also used for some of the subject matter that I needed more practice with. Watched countless videos about tools and concepts on youtube as well.
